Princes Risborough
Princes Risborough is a market town which can trace its history back to at least the Doomsday Book - in fact Earl (later King) Harold was an early Lord of the Manor. The town gained its royal name in the 14th century, the “Princes” referring to the Black Prince who had land and a small palace near the town.
The town stands on the main Aylesbury to High Wycombe road near the point where is crosses the ancient Icknield Way. The town centre is largely unspoiled with a good collection of shops, pubs and restaurants. The centre features the Market House rebuilt in the early 19th Century and the old town still features a number of 17th century cottages.
Next to the fine 13th century church stands Princes Risborough Manor House which was built in the 17th century. It is a fine red brick building now owned by the National Trust, but only open to the public by special arrangement during the summer.
