Memories

A few people who used to live in our village or who have special memories of the village have e-mailed us with their stories and these are reproduced below. We would love to hear from others so please send us a short e-mail if you would like to share with others.

Fiona Capewell-Hughes wrote of her memories of the 1970s the 70’s:-

Our main attraction was at Radnage House Riding School . Every one knew us from the R:R:S: and most of the residents around rode there.

It belonged to Miss Pat Smallwood, her brother Dick and his wife a highly reputed establishment during those days. Even Princess Anne came to visit us in  a very large Red Helicopter to support one of our charitable actions for those hindered from spastic paralysis as she. was the Patron of the Association. .

During the years. of training for the BHSAI exam, we used to indulge in all sorts between, harvesting, (for hay), special Christmas horse shows as well as the classic show jumping in the summer time. As teenagers we used to spend our time helping Dick repaint the stables in spring and then all the show jumps, covering ourselves in various shades of paint.

Just to round off my years in Radnage before moving abroad I worked at Pophleys in 1978, We used to go to the Boxing day meet for hunting before Mr. Ian Anderson bought the property but then they moved in. The house has a certain history and was said to be haunted so they said.

Jenny Paget, another former resident also wrote:-

I used to live in Radnage over 45yrs ago. I used to live on the farm on Bowers Lane near the bottom on the right side, before you reach the Bottom Road. I loved it there. My Dad made it a lovely place. It used to be called Green Acres. They were the happiest years  of my life. I have been living in Canada now since we moved. My sister and I used to ride our horses all around Radnage, Bennet End, along the Bottom Road and up to Bledlow Ridge. We used to ride along the Bottom Road for quite a way and then up to Radnage passed the Riding School and back down Bowers Lane. We would also ride through the woods etc.
